Slow computer tune-up

Computer slow to start and slow to do anything? We'll find what's holding it back.

  • Slow to open
  • Fan runs constantly
  • You get "disk full"
  • Updates keep running

A slow computer usually has a cause we can find: too many programs starting with it, a nearly full or ageing drive, stuck updates, or unwanted software. We track down what's slowing yours, clear it out safely, and tell you honestly whether an upgrade would make a real difference.

Common problems

Sound familiar?

  • It takes minutes to start up and be usable
  • Programs and web pages are slow to open
  • The fan runs constantly, even doing simple things
  • You get "disk full" or low storage warnings
  • Updates keep running or never seem to finish
  • It's much slower than when you bought it

How we fix it

What the tune-up covers

  1. Measure first

We check how the computer starts, what's running and how hard the drive and memory are working.

  2. Trim what starts with it

We stop programs you don't need from launching every time you turn it on.

  3. Clear out and tidy

Unwanted programs and temporary files removed, with your OK. Your photos and documents stay put.

  4. Finish the updates

Stuck or failed updates completed, so the computer stops working on them in the background.

  5. Check the hardware

Drive health, memory and cooling. If an upgrade, such as a faster drive (called an SSD) or more memory, would genuinely help, we'll explain the difference and the cost before doing anything.

What this service doesn't cover We can't make a very old computer feel new. If it's past the point where a tune-up or upgrade helps, we'll say so.

Questions

Slow computer answered

Why has my computer got so slow?+

Usually it's a build-up of programs that start automatically, a drive that's nearly full or wearing out, or updates that never finished. Less often it's unwanted software running in the background.

Will a tune-up delete my files?+

No. We remove programs and clutter only with your OK, and your photos and documents stay where they are.

Would a new drive make it faster?+

On many older computers, replacing a traditional hard drive with an SSD makes a big difference. We'll check whether it will for yours before suggesting it.

Can this be done remotely?+

Usually, yes, if the computer connects to the internet. Hardware upgrades need hands-on work, at your home or in our workshop.

How is this charged?+

By technician time at our standard rates, plus any parts you approve. See Pricing.
