Computer cleanup after a scam

Bank asked you to get your computer cleaned after a scam?

We help Perth customers whose computers have been hacked, infected with malware or accessed by scammers. Our technicians inspect and clean affected devices, then give you a written service report and invoice for your bank's review.

Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. Onsite across most of Perth, or remotely.

Quick answer

Why does my bank want my computer cleaned? When a bank believes a scammer or harmful program has reached the device you bank on, it may block online banking until you show the device has been cleaned by an IT professional. We find and remove what's there, secure your accounts, check the device is safe for banking, and give you a written service report and an invoice. Your bank reviews them and decides when to restore access.

Do this first

Before we arrive: four things to do now

  1. Stop using the device for banking

Don't sign in to your bank or email on it until it's been cleaned.

  2. Disconnect it from the internet

Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the cable, so a scammer can't connect again. Leave it switched on or off, but don't reset it.

  3. Call your bank

Use the number on the back of your card. Ask what they need from you, and note any reference number they give.

  4. Then call us

Tell us your bank has asked you to get your computer cleaned, and we'll book the soonest time we can. 08 6559 6485

Don't delete messages, call logs or programs yourself. They help us see what happened, and you may need them for your bank or a police report.

Advice for next timeSimple steps to stay safe, in plain English.

Please note: your bank decides whether and when to restore access. Every bank's process is a little different, so ask your bank exactly what it needs. If you're not sure, we can join a call with you and your bank, with your permission.

7-point check

The safe banking check, in plain English

Part of every cleanup. You can also book it on its own if you just want peace of mind.

  1. Still getting safety updates

We check your computer, phone or tablet still gets safety updates from Microsoft, Apple or Google, and install any that are waiting.

  2. Virus protection switched on

We make sure your virus protection is on, up to date and working. One good one is enough, so we remove extras that slow you down.

  3. Unwanted connections blocked

Your computer and your home internet box both have a built-in barrier that keeps strangers out. We check both are switched on.

  4. Your web browser set up safely

We update Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, switch on its warnings about dangerous websites, and remove add-ons you didn't ask for.

  5. Safety settings tightened

We turn on settings that stop many dangerous websites from opening, and lock your files so no one can read them if your laptop is lost or stolen.

  6. Old programs updated or removed

Out-of-date programs are a common way in. We update the ones you use, and remove old ones and anything a scammer may have left behind.

  7. Ready for your bank's app

We check your device can run your bank's app and its sign-in codes, and will keep getting updates. If it's too old to be safe, we'll tell you plainly and talk through your options.

You stay in charge. You sign in to your bank yourself, and we'll never ask for your banking password.

Questions

Computer cleanup after a scam: FAQs

My bank asked me to get my computer cleaned. What do I do?

Stop using the computer for banking, disconnect it from the internet, and call us. We inspect and clean it, secure your accounts, and give you a written service report and invoice to send to your bank.

Why has my bank blocked my online banking?

Usually because it believes a scammer or harmful program may have reached the device you bank on, for example after a scam call where someone connected to your computer. Locking online banking protects your money while the device is cleaned.

What do I need to give my bank?

Most banks ask for proof that an IT professional has cleaned the device. We give you a written service report of what we found and fixed, and a tax invoice. Ask your bank exactly what it needs, so we can make sure the record covers it.

Can you talk to my bank for me?

If you're not sure what your bank needs, we can join a call with you and your bank, with your permission, so we know exactly what to cover. Your bank will still deal with you directly.

Do you provide an internet banking certificate?

We provide a written service report, which is what people often mean by an internet banking certificate or computer cleaning certificate. It's a factual record from the technician of what was checked, found and fixed. It isn't an official bank approval: your bank reviews it and makes its own decision.

How do I unblock online banking after a scam?

Only your bank can unblock it. Most banks want the device cleaned by an IT professional first. Once we've cleaned it and given you the service report and invoice, send them to your bank as it asks and follow its steps.

My bank says my computer has a virus. Can you help?

Yes. We find and remove the virus or other harmful software, check nothing else was changed, and give you a written service report for your bank.

A scammer hacked my computer. What should I do?

Turn off the internet connection, don't sign in to your bank or email on it, call your bank on the number on your card, then call us. We'll remove the scammer's access and clean the computer.

Will my bank accept your report?

Your bank makes that decision, and we can't promise it. Our report sets out clearly what was found, removed and secured, which is what banks generally look for. If your bank asks for something extra, tell us and we'll help.

How quickly can you help?

Often the same day or the next. Call us and we'll find the soonest time we can. Until then, keep the device off the internet and don't use it for banking.

Can you do it remotely?

Yes, but we recommend onsite when a scammer has had remote access, so we can check the device hands-on before anything connects to it again. Onsite covers most of the Perth metro area.

Will I lose my photos or files?

No. We remove harmful programs, not your files. If anything needs to change that could affect your files, we'll tell you first.

Do you need my banking password?

No. You sign in to your bank yourself. We'll never ask for your banking password.

I only used my phone. Do I still need this?

Ask your bank which devices it wants checked. We clean and check phones and tablets too, and your report lists every device we checked.

Should I report the scam?

Yes. Report it to your bank first, then to ReportCyber and Scamwatch. If your personal details were shared, IDCARE can help with identity theft.

How much does it cost?

By technician time at our standard rates, so you can see the cost before you book. See Pricing.

How do I stop it happening again?

Hang up on anyone who rings asking to connect to your computer, never call numbers in pop-up warnings, and keep two-step sign-in turned on. Your service report includes simple tips.
