Computer repairs

Computer won't start, keeps crashing or sounds wrong? We'll find out why and fix it.

  • Won't turn on
  • It freezes
  • It gets hot
  • It's making clicking or grinding

We repair home computers and laptops that won't turn on, freeze, restart on their own, overheat or make grinding noises. We find the actual cause, whether it's a failing part, a software fault or a setting, then fix it at your home or remotely, and tell you plainly if a repair isn't worth it.

Common problems

What's your computer doing?

  • It won't turn on, or turns on to a black screen
  • It freezes, shows a blue error screen or restarts by itself
  • It gets hot, the fan roars, or it switches off without warning
  • It's making clicking or grinding noises
  • The laptop battery won't charge or runs flat quickly
  • Windows or macOS won't finish starting up

Is it just slow rather than broken? See Slow computer tune-up.

How we fix it

How we track down the fault

  1. Ask what's been happening

When it started, what changed, and what you were doing when it went wrong. That often points straight to the cause.

  2. Check the hardware

Power supply, battery, memory, storage drive and cooling. These are the parts that most often fail and cause crashes or a computer that won't start.

  3. Check the software

Updates, drivers (the small programs that let Windows talk to each part), startup errors and recent changes.

  4. Protect your files first

If the storage drive is failing, we copy your important files off before anything else.

  5. Fix it, or give you the options

We repair or replace the faulty part, or fix the software. If a part is needed, we confirm the cost with you before ordering.

What this service doesn't cover Liquid damage and circuit board repairs. If your computer needs either, we'll tell you plainly, help you get your files back where possible, and help you choose and set up a replacement.

Questions

Computer repair answered

Why won't my computer turn on?+

The most common causes are a failed power supply or charger, a flat or failed battery, or a faulty part inside. We test each one so we replace only what's actually broken.

Can you replace my laptop battery?+

Yes, where a replacement battery is available for your model and it's worth doing. We'll check the battery's condition first and confirm the cost before ordering.

Is it worth repairing an older computer?+

It depends on the fault and the computer. We'll tell you plainly if a repair would cost more than it's worth, and help with a replacement if that makes more sense.

Do I need to back up before you start?+

If you can, yes. If you can't, tell us what matters most and we'll try to copy it off first.

How is this charged?+

By technician time at our standard rates, plus any parts you approve. See Pricing.
