Scam & phishing help

Think you've been scammed? We'll check your computer and secure your accounts.

  • Someone rang saying they were
  • You clicked a link in
  • You typed a password
  • Pop-up told you to call

If a scammer has been on your computer, or you've clicked a link or given details you shouldn't have, we can help straight away. We check and clean your computer, change your passwords, turn on extra protection, and help you secure your email and other accounts. If money or card details are involved, call your bank first.

Common problems

What happened?

  • Someone rang saying they were from a tech company, and you let them connect
  • You clicked a link in an email or text that looked real
  • You typed a password or code into a website that turned out to be fake
  • A pop-up told you to call a number, and you did
  • Your email is sending messages you didn't write
  • You've noticed changes to your accounts or emails you don't recognise

Is it just pop-ups or strange behaviour, with no scammer involved? See Virus & malware removal.

How we fix it

How we help after a scam

  1. Cut off access

We disconnect the computer and remove any remote-access program the scammer installed, so they can't get back in.

  2. Check and clean the computer

We scan for anything left behind and remove it.

  3. Change your passwords

Starting with your email, then banking and shopping accounts, from a clean device.

  4. Turn on two-step sign-in

A code sent to your phone as well as your password, so a stolen password alone isn't enough.

  5. Check your accounts

We look for changes the scammer may have made, such as forwarding rules on your email or new recovery details.

  6. Explain what to watch for

Plain-English notes on the signs of a follow-up scam, and how to report what happened.

What this service doesn't cover Getting money back. Your bank handles that, so call them first if money or card details are involved.

Questions

Scam help answered

I let a scammer onto my computer. Is it still safe to use?+

Not until it's checked. Turn off the internet connection, don't type any passwords on it, and call us. We'll remove their access and clean it.

Should I call my bank?+

Yes, straight away if money, card details or banking passwords may be involved. Then call us to secure the computer and accounts.

How do I know an email or call is a scam?+

Common signs are urgency, threats, requests for codes or passwords, and links that don't match the real website. Genuine companies don't ring unexpectedly asking to connect to your computer.

Can you help if it happened a while ago?+

Yes. We'll still check the computer and accounts, and look for anything the scammer changed.

How is this charged?+

By technician time at our standard rates, onsite or remote. See Pricing.
